I developed a novel Virtual Aided Design Engineering Review (VADER) system to explore the area of collaborative design review meetings. Design reviews are critical points in a product’s life cycle where important decisions are made and substantial amount of knowledge is exchanged. Salient but important aspects of decision making and changes made are difficult to document explicitly. VADER provides a virtual reality based primary interface and multiple distributed web interfaces. It captures multi-modal data articulated in the review meeting such as CAD model interaction, text annotations, screenshots, speech, audio and video. Multi-dimensional data captured contains both structured and unstructured information. Research into techniques to search and retrieve data efficiently were developed – indexing methods including time-line, part number, and keywords were implemented.
